Chỉ còn ít ngày nữa là tròn ba trăm năm ngày sinh Diderot Bách khoa toàn thư đồ sộ, nhà văn có nhiều đóng góp độc đáo, nhà triết học duy vật, sôi nổi “lòng yêu chân lý và chính nghĩa”* , nhà mỹ học, nhà lý luận và phê bình nghệ thuật nổi tiếng ở Pháp. Ông là “nhà thơ lớn, họa sĩ lớn, nhà điêu khắc lớn, nhạc sĩ lớn... tuy chưa từng bao giờ làm thơ, vẽ tranh, soạn nhạc, nặn tượng”* . Tuy ông sống cách chúng ta đã lâu, thời đại của ông khác xa với thời đại bây giờ, nhưng sự nghiệp của ông nói chung, các công trình mỹ học và lý luận phê bình nghệ thuật của ông nói riêng, vẫn là những đóng góp quý báu để thế hệ chúng ta ngày nay sàng lọc, rút ra những điều bổ ích.

Denis Diderot sinh ở Langres, một thành phố cổ kính miền Đông Bắc nước Pháp, trong một gia đình thợ thủ công nhiều đời chuyên nghề sản xuất các loại dao kéo. Thuở nhỏ, Diderot học ở quê nhà; năm mười hai tuổi, nhà triết học tương lai chịu lễ cắt tóc, chuẩn bị phụng sự tôn giáo. Nhưng ba năm sau, năm 1728, ông quyết định từ giã quê hương lên Paris học tập, bất chấp mọi người ngăn cản. Đây là bước ngoặt quan trọng trong cuộc đời ông. Những năm đầu tiên sống ở Paris, nhà văn sẽ có dịp gợi lại sau này qua cuộc đối thoại kỳ lạ giữa “Tôi” và “Hắn” trong Cháu ông Rameau (Le Neveu de Rameau)* , một cuộc sống gần như lang thang, bữa đói bữa no, nay đây mai đó. Cảnh túng thiếu sẽ còn đeo đẳng ông cho mãi về già. Nhưng để bù đắp lại, Diderot được hưởng một cuộc sống tinh thần hết sức phong phú. Ông thỏa sức tắm mình trong không khí của thời đại; ông mở tâm hồn ra đón những luồng gió mới của bốn phương; ông đọc sách của Voltaire, ông tham dự những buổi tọa đàm ở nhà triết gia d’Holbach; ông kết bạn với F. Grimm ở Đức vừa sang; ông được J.J. Rousseau đến thăm ở Vincennes khi bị giam cầm; ông dự đám tang Montesquieu...*
